Much like Storm Claudia tore through the north-west the previous evening, City overwhelmed Manchester United away at the their home ground. It was a convincing three goal triumph for their manager's side owing to goals from Rebecca Knaak, Shaw and Lauren Hemp. It was a result that clearly signaled their title credentials as they reinforced their standing at the WSL pinnacle.

Successive Losses for Manchester United

This outcome signalled consecutive WSL setbacks for the United manager's side for the maiden instance since spring 2024, placing them seven points off the league leaders with their trophy ambitions hanging by a thread.

The Red Devils' capacity to balance domestic and European soccer with a thin roster has been a hotly discussed subject since they secured entry to the Champions League. Considering the fixture list, it always appeared this was the period that would fully examine this fortitude. Regrettably for the opposition, they seemed weary throughout, the historic win against the French side clearly having had an impact.

Team Changes

The United manager had sought to freshen things up with a several alterations. Toone, Terland, Dominique Janssen and Galton all brought freshness, although the dropping of the on-form Melvine Malard to the substitutes caused surprise.

Dominant First Half

Early Chances

The warning signs came quickly when Vivianne Miedema used her physicality to muscle Zigiotti off the ball, only to send her shot wide. Lauren Hemp was at the heart of everything early on, taking advantage of the room left by Riviere down United’s right flank. Her deliveries were causing problems and led to an opportunity for Yui Hasegawa that Anna Sandberg scrambled off the line.

The Red Devils had multiple sorties forwards, their straightforward approach giving them alternatives in the wide areas but they could not trouble Ayaka Yamashita. Manchester City, in the meantime, controlled possession, teasing their opposition and trying to draw them out of their defensive shape.

Scoring Spree

They turned chances into goals with almost the first period played when Aoba Fujino won the home team a corner. A ball to the back post was nodded across goal by Shaw for Knaak to nod home. It was City’s 7th header of the campaign.

They increased their cushion with an additional two goals just before the break. When Rose was permitted to advance through the midfield from the back, the field became spacious for the hosts. The influential Kerstin Casparij picked the ball up on the right side before delivering a pinpoint driven ball for Bunny Shaw to bundle home. Four minutes later, they had a third after a rapid shift in possession saw Lauren Hemp given the room to drive a shot home from outside the box.

Second Half

The primary adjustment came from the United manager at the break as Malard entered for Terland but by this time it was futile to change the course of the match. Ex- Manchester City player Jess Park came closest, hitting the woodwork, but the away team were lacking in ideas and failed to register a single shot on target.

The hosts, meanwhile, could have added to their cushion when a excellent Miedema long ball sent Shaw away only for her to miss the chance but it was insignificant to the winning team. After failing to overcome any team who finished above them last season, City's side now have victories against the Gunners and United to position them in a favorable situation after the opening fixtures.
