Pacific Bluefin Fish Fetches Unprecedented Sum of 3.2 million dollars at Tokyo Auction
A bulky Pacific bluefin tuna made headlines at the Toyosu fish market this Monday, achieving a unprecedented bid of 510.3 million yen (3.2 million US dollars; £2.4m) during the venue's opening auction of the calendar year.
The winning bid for the 535-pound fish came from the operator of a nationwide sushi chain, which runs outlets across the country and abroad.
"The first tuna brings a prosperous start," commented the company president, a regular participant at the traditional new year's auction.
Dubbed the Tuna King, this businessman is famous for placing substantial bids for premium bluefin tuna at these symbolic new year auctions.
Auction Surprise and Record-Setting Precedent
Following the auction, the successful bidder informed the press that he was "surprised at the final price," noting, "I expected we would be able to buy it a little at a lower price, but the price skyrocketed rapidly."
This latest acquisition surpasses his previous historic purchases:
- He secured a tuna for 56.5 million yen back in 2012.
- He paid 155 million yen the following year.
- In 2019, he acquired a tuna for 333.6 million yen ($2.1 million).
Despite previously commenting that he thought he "did too much," he has now managed to surpass his personal record yet again.
A Tradition of High Prices
The opening auction at the Toyosu fish market is notoriously characterized by exceptionally high prices. The previous year, the first tuna was bought for 207 million yen by a different food company, which indicated the fish would be featured at its restaurants nationwide.
The intense atmosphere at the fish market during these pre-dawn auctions has transformed into a major spectacle in Tokyo. Monday's auction, which commenced around 05:00 local time, was equally bustling.
Immediate Consumption
The extremely valuable tuna was promptly processed for patrons at the bidder's sushi chains soon after the auction ended.
"I feel like I've begun the year in a positive way after tasting something so lucky as the year gets underway," shared one happy customer.
