Toy Story 5 Teaser Pits Woody and Buzz Versus a Digital Device
Exactly 30 years since the original Toy Story film debuted, launching Pixar as a major animation studio and bringing viewers to iconic figures like Woody (the actor) and Buzz Lightyear (the voice talent), who are now famous worldwide.
In 2026, the fifth installment is set to arrive. The first teaser trailer for Toy Story 5 landed this week, offering a glimpse into the storyline but keeping viewers wondering how it will address the ending of Toy Story 4.
Bonnie's New Toy: A Digital Device Frightens the Gang
The preview shows the young girl — who received Andy's toys when he left for college — receiving a latest plaything, one that terrifies the familiar toy group. Bonnie gets her initial digital gadget, and she is thrilled about it.
Theoretically, the amphibian-inspired device will animate just like Bonnie's other toys. However, the toys appear to consider it as a danger intending to supplant them, which it likely will.
Woody's Return: Mysteries from Toy Story 4
One thing the trailer doesn't touch on is why Woody is returned with his friends in Bonnie's room. The end of Toy Story 4 saw him embark on a fresh journey with Bo Peep (Annie Potts), traveling with a carnival and assisting giveaway items find good homes.
Surely, Pixar will explain the consequences of Toy Story 4 in the film. Witnessing him appear in the familiar setting without warning is a little strange, though. It also raises questions whether Bo Peep will have returned with him. And where is the stuntman toy (Keanu Reeves)?
Continuity from the Last Installment
Fortunately, some elements are carrying over from the earlier movie. The final act the cowboy did before departing for his new life was hand over his sheriff badge to Jessie (the voice actor), entrusting her as the leader of the toy domain. The clip displays the insignia pinned to her shirt.
Hopefully she is still the key figure among the toys.
Toy Story 5 arrives in theaters on June 19, 2026.
