Wimbledon Introduces Video Replay Technology in 2025.
Wimbledon will follow the American and Australian Opens in employing video review systems.
Replay systems are set to arrive at Wimbledon this year.
Players will gain the right to question particular rulings from the chair umpire, mirroring the practice already in place at each of the US Open and the Aussie major.
This technology will be operational on Centre Court and the number one court throughout the tournament and on the remaining featured courts when they are hosting singles matches.
This development arrives only a year after the AELTC rolled out electronic line calling, which terminated the centuries-old role of line officials.
Reviewable Decisions
Players cannot to dispute the call of the ELC system, but they can ask for the official to re-examine other situations, such as:
- If a tennis ball has double-bounced.
- Whether a shot made contact with an rival's racket or body on the way past.
- Potential hindrance at the conclusion of a rally.
Notably, there is no limit on the amount of reviews a competitor can initiate.
Case in Point
An illustrative incident took place in Indian Wells recently, where a top player used the review system against his opponent.
The British player conceded it was a difficult call for the official, but believed his opponent had "used the regulations effectively."
The umpire watched a video and determined Draper was responsible for interference, granting the point to Medvedev.
Growing Trend
Video reviews aren't new for major tournaments. It has been in use at the American major for two years and the Aussie Open since 2025.
Additionally, it is becoming more common on the women’s WTA Tour, and by the coming year the ATP circuit will have the system in place at every one of its events.
Other Changes
A further change at The Championships this year involves the addition of graphical cues on displays to support the audio calls from the electronic line calling system.
This addresses instances where fans have occasionally been unsure whether a shot was out or in.
In other news, with precisely a century of days to go until the beginning of the Championships, organizers have further revealed an increase in daily capacity at the qualifiers in Roehampton.
